Self-Guided Movie Tour of Marion County

Dani Gallagher

When you think of Hollywood movies, you probably don’t think of a rural city in Central Florida. However, Marion County has been a popular destination for movie-makers. Famous film producers have used Marion County as the backdrop for many feature films. Take your own self-guided movie tour and view some of the scenes that made it into movies.

The Springs of Ocala

The history of Ocala in the movies dates all the way back to the 1900s. Back then, directors were drawn to the beautiful springs and forests of the area. If you head through Silver Springs State Park, you can view some of the nature that’s appeared in several movies.

One of the most notable movies with scenes filmed in the area is the James Bond Series. When Sean Connery was James Bond, movie makers shot underwater scenes in the springs. Thunderball and Moonraker had scenes shot in the springs. If you take a glass bottom boat tour, you can see why the clear water was so appealing to filmmakers.

In 1962, Elvis Presley was filmed in Silver Springs. Follow that Dream was filmed in part at a bank on Silver Springs Boulevard. Prior to that, Tarzan was filmed in the Ocala National Forest.

If you like horror movies, you may have seen Jeepers Creepers. This movie featured shots from several Ocala roads. Although you might not find movie stars in Ocala, you can find a rich movie history.
