Exploring Vero Beach: How to Plan for a Day at the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge

Trail with Trees

One of the more exciting adventures waiting for you in Vero Beach is an exploration of the Pelican National Wildlife Refuge. If you’re planning on taking a trip to the refuge, you should plan with care. Follow these tips to make the most of your time exploring Vero Beach and this hidden gem.

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes

While walking around the refuge, you’ll want to be in comfortable shoes. You probably will do a lot of trail walking, and this can be uncomfortable in sandals. Sandals also make you more likely to slip and fall. While you don’t need a pair of hiking boots, you do need shoes that are comfortable and have some traction.

2. Bring Bug Spray

In Florida, it’s always bug season. Although some times of the year are more buggy than others, you should always come prepared with bug spray. Find a kind that works for you and bring it in your backpack. You may need to reapply it a few times.

3. Bring Sun Protection

While some of the trails are covered, others do place you in direct sunlight. Therefore, you should pack some sunblock. You should also consider wearing a hat to shade your face, and long sleeves to protect your arms.

4. Pack Water

Of course, hydration is crucial. Bring enough water for you and everyone else who will be with you.
