Vero Beach Attractions: Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary

Vero Beach Attractions: Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary

If you’re interested in checking out one of the lesser-known Vero Beach attractions, head to Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary. Located near Riverside Park, the venue is the perfect place for a relaxing day.

When World War 2 came to an end, the government realigned the Vero Beach channel to make a modern drawbridge. Using extra material from a dredging project, they built up the island.

After it was built, the island was purchased by the City of Vero Beach. In the 1960s, they named it Memorial Island Park. The name didn’t change to its current name until 2004.

The island is a place for you to reflect on the sacrifices veterans made for the country. When you visit, you can find memorials for deceased Indian River County combat veterans. Although it can be sobering, visiting the memorials is also calming.

You can find the island south of the Merrill Barber Bridge and next to Riverside Park. While you’re there, you can talk a walk around the island. You can also sit on one of the several benches and relax.

Because the island is a memorial for veterans, it is not a place for recreational activities. Visitors to the island are not allowed to enjoy any recreational sports. However, you are welcome to relax and reflect.
